Mikayla Coyne- 2nd blog post

In the article, "Who are you and what are you doing here?", the author, Mark Edmundson, brings up some very interesting points. One point that particularly stood out to me was the idea of having to fight for education. "You can get a terrific education in America now—there are astonishing opportunities at almost every college—but the education will not be presented to you wrapped and bowed. To get it, you’ll need to struggle and strive, to be strong, and occasionally even to piss off some admirable people". When going into college, I don't think anyone would think about telling you this. I think people just tell you all of the great aspects about college and nobody really focuses on the drawbacks, or how hard they truly had to work at their education. I really liked this piece, because I liked how honest Edmundson was in describing how things really were, not just what people wanted to hear. Edmundson describes education not being wrapped and bowed, which just from a high school education and one semester of college, I can already agree with. I think that a college education has to be worked for and nothing is going to be handed to you, which is what Edmundson is showing in the piece.
Edmundson also brought up an interesting point of going to college and doing what you love. I feel like everyone is expected to know exactly what they want to do once they are in college, but I really admire the fact that Edmundson acknowledges it is okay to change your mind. "What if you arrive at college devoted to pre-med, sure that nothing will make you and your family happier than a life as a physician, only to discover that elementary-school teaching is where your heart is? You might learn that you’re not meant to be a doctor at all. Of course, given your intellect and discipline, you can still probably be one". I think it is very important to find out what you love to do, even if that means changing your mind a couple of times before finding that. So many people nowadays just focus on getting the best grades, or a career that can make the most money, that many forget why they are doing any it. I think that it is important to know your true passion and make decisions on what you want to do with the rest of your life from there.
