This time tutoring at the EMK was a completely different experience than last time.  Instead of my kid not being interested in talking or engaging at all, he actually talked too much.  The students were assigned to come up with an essay topic, but in the entire hour an a half we did maybe 5 minutes of work at most.  It turns out that my kid was an aspiring powerlifter (different from weightlifting) and we talked about that for a good majority of our session together.  He had his first powerlifting meet in two weeks and was asking for tips and advice on how to do well in his meet since he had no experience.  We also talked about what the health science major was like and he seemed really interested in everything I had to say.  He seemed like a very nice boy, but he didn't seem like he wanted to do any work.  He even asked for my Instagram, Snapchat, and phone number.  However, the lady who ran the orientation said we weren't allowed to give it to the students and one of the people that came with us was listening to our conversation so I didn't really know what to say.  I panicked and told the kid that I didn't have any type of social media when he asked for my Instagram.  Then when I told him I had a competition this Sunday in Salem (2 hours by train), he kept saying how he wanted to come and watch and I didn't really know how to handle that type of situation.  Every time he brought it up I changed the subject onto his competition.  At the end of our session, he asked for my number and I saw the lady looking so I panicked and wrote down a fake number.  He seemed like a genuinely nice kid who just seemed like he needed guidance and I would love to talk to him more.  I think the next time I see him I will just tell him I put down the wrong number by accident and tell him that we weren't allowed to give him our social media.  I had a pretty positive experience tutoring this time and would love to talk to him again and support him in his upcoming powerlifting meet (and his essay of course).

  1. I also had a very different experience than last time. My kid was much more interested in talking to me and learning about college. It was really nice!
