Blog post #7 - Julia Zaucha

After last weeks discussion, the biggest takeaway I had was about the reading. I understand the whole idea of reparations and that they have been used in the past, but pertaining to the idea of slavery and that it happened so far in the past, who actually receives the reparations and who becomes punished for the things that have happened? It is a hard topic because there is no one alive who was involved in the events that did occur. Also, for the people who lost their lives during that time due to slavery, how do you repay that? But also for that lifetime of suffering - how do you even repay that? Money? Because I am positive that the number of people who suffered from this will never be equal to an amount of money. Also for what happened after slavery. The amount of discrimination and racism that lives on today - how can one receive reparations for that? The difference in treatment today is obviously way better, but the amount of racism that still lives on after everyone has been given "equal rights" I mean it is still large, which just isn't right. But I understand that is the author's point is to make that discussion of how and really attempt to make something happen, though it may be hard to get to a final outcome without direct access to the people who were actually tormented under the conditions of slavery.
Also moving on, a little bit about my week: there was a bat in my room last week. Me and my roommate were just sitting on our beds doing our work and we kept hearing sounds in the bathroom. She went up and checked it and I am assuming she didn't look up because she didn't see anything at the time; I said it was probably a ghost.  We sat back down and continued our work and no more than 5 minutes later a bat is just flying around our room. I am screaming. My roommate is screaming. We both exit the room (I was smart and grabbed my phone and we zoomed outta there). We got an RA to call pest removal and after another hour, pest control showed up... with a tennis racket. I have videos of it all so it is all true (#proof) and in the videos, you can hear him swatting the racket before you can hear a loud thump, of him killing the bat and bagging it up. Sad night for the bat, R.I.P.
