Abby,
I love that you got affirmation from your student. That is clearly so important for both of you. I think that I would definitely have benefited from something like a writers room when I was their age (or even now lol). I am very extraverted really needed someone to bounce ideas off of in order to organize myself, so I got most of my writing guidance from my dad who is a very good writer and my mom with idea development. But overtime I relied so much on my mom, dad and close friends for help with writing (by bouncing ideas off of them and getting their advice on sentence fluency and such), that I didn't develop the skills on how to get feedback from "strangers" when I am struggling in the beginning stages of a writing process. I feel that the most helpful thing is to be able to sit down with someone and not just ask one clarifying question (because one question is hardly ever enough to really bring clarity) but to be able to work through something completely with someone empowering. I even would guess that by learning to do that with different people you learn yourself better by having to explain your thoughts to someone who cannot assume them so easily.
