Kat's 7th blog post

I hate glasses.  I love glasses. It’s a very complicated relationship for me. There are lots of reasons for my mixed feelings about them, and all of my feelings only pertain to when I am wearing glasses.
Of all of the reasons I hate wearing glasses, the absolute inconvenience takes the cake as the most annoying aspect.  Whenever it rains while I have my glasses on, they get all wet and then I can’t see anything. They also slip down my nose whenever I do anything mildly active.  My glasses frames in particular are very hard for me to see when I don’t have them on, so blind searches occur often. To avoid these issues, I wear contacts frequently, but those have all of their own downsides.  Whether that we drying out, or one falling out, or forgetting to remove them before bed, my contacts are just as annoying as my glasses.
Buying new frames for my glasses every couple of years has always proved to be a drama filled ordeal.  I first needed glasses when I was in seventh grade. I vividly remember my mom bringing me into Pearle Vision over the weekend.  After the eye exam a very preppy woman helped me pick out my first pair. I thought the ones that were chosen were all ugly, but my mom and this random woman kept telling me how cute I looked in them.  Being the spineless 13 year old that I was, I caved in and allowed the purchase of my ugly glasses. I think that this first stent at wearing glasses for middle school birthed my hate for eyewear. My ugly glasses were a constant reminder that I was smack in the middle of my awkward stage.  To make matters worse, the next time that my grandma visited my house, my family noticed that my grandma and I had the same pair of ugly glasses frames; she did pull them off better than I did, which made me resent them even more. The next couple of pairs weren’t nearly as bad, and during this time I learned how to put in my contacts to escape my frames.  My next pair were more my style, but my brothers would not stop calling me a librarian for weeks. They repeated this annoyance with my next frames, but this time called me either John Lennon or Harry Potter. Now I don’t care what they say to me, when I was younger I took every word they said to me to heart. Oof.

I know it’s hard to believe, but I do love my glasses.  They are definitely an accessory, and they can change how people first judge me.  My glasses are also blue light glasses as well as their typical function, so whenever I know I’ll have a lot of screen time, I can avoid a headache by wearing them.  There are of course more reasons that I like them, but at the end of the day, if I could have 20/20 vision I would choose it in a heartbeat.
