post: lucky number 6 - Zaucha
Foreword: the following post is going to be a food review of my past week and then I will also be writing about my experience at the EMK.
Over this past week, my Aunt came to town. One thing I know about family in town is going out to eat... and not having to pay (ayooo). I was very fortunate to eat better than the average college student but basically for 2 meals but hey I didn't have to pay so that's what I'm getting at here. One of my Aunt's and I's favorite places is called the Mission Grill, which is over by Brigham Women and Children's Hospital. I have gone there with at least once every time I have come to Boston (which is a pretty good amount). I had a nice meal, one that was composed of a breakfast menu item that cost $13.00. It was 2 eggs (sunny side up), smoked applewood bacon, baby potatoes, whole wheat bread (with butter and jam), and a garnish of orange slices. Although it sounds similar to something you could get at Rebecca's Cafe here on campus I feel as if it was much better at the Mission Grill.
Specifically for each food item. The sunny side up eggs was great. They were cooked but the yolk was still runny - what one would expect from that style of egg. They were unseasoned but the classic salt and pepper on top did just the trick. Overall a 9/10. Next, the applewood smoked bacon. I have eaten a lot of bacon in my days and it was very good. However the bacon slices were not all together and although they were fully cooked, I asked for slightly crispy but that was not delivered. Overall great taste, so 6/10. Baby potatoes are now up for discussion. They were good, a little overcooked, but mega underseasoned. I was a little disappointed even because potatoes are one of my favorite parts of the meal. I believe if the cook added a little garlic butter and salt it may have completed the taste, overall: 5/10. Lastly the whole wheat bread. Honestly, if they messed this one up I would have called it a disappointment and luckily it was great bread, can't really judge it so a 10/10.
It overall comes down to a score of 7.5/10 for breakfast but if you were to ask me about their dinner options an easy 10/10. I mean it was a bar so I expect better bar food than breakfast food. But even still, I would go back due to the kind servers and awesome atmosphere.
But for my volunteering at the EMK, I had a great experience. A group of 5 went over to the school and we were split up some of us with groups while some people (like me) were with individuals. I was with a nice guy and they were writing a paper about a book, one that I had never read. I read through his thesis and intro and we worked on it for the majority of the time, but even though I had just a short time with him, we got a lot done. One of the things I noticed was that he had all of the ideas he just couldn't formulate them, a problem I have had in the past. I continued asking him questions which helped a lot for him being able to organize all of his work and it was obvious that a lot of progress was being made. I have tutored people before and usually what happens is that they need a guide to for ideas and then they are oftentimes set from there.
I like this approach to a blog post. It's almost relieving to hear about food coming from someplace other than the dining halls on campus, and I love finding new restaurants. It's also interesting comparing experiences with EMK volunteering because every student is different, even if you're part of the same volunteer rotation.
