A virus is defined as an infective agent that can only survive within a host. Also, viruses cannot necessarily be killed with antibiotics so if you thought that would save you, it won't. Covid-19. Coronavirus. What is it? It is a virus that started in Wuhan, China that soon spread globally and is essentially disturbing the world in unimaginable ways. Countries are completely quarantines or shut-down, some people can't even leave their homes it is so bad. But how did it get this way? It spread by infecting one person after another with its respiratory virus ad flu-like symptoms and eventually hopped on a plane to other countries around the world. But how did no one catch it early on? Because the symptoms hadn't set in until about two weeks after, causing it to go undetected. Now it is especially big in the USA and is causing a domino effect across the country. Cases have popped up in almost every state (if not, every) and have also caused many deaths. Schools have begun to shut down and some travel is prohibited. However, it is known that it more heavily affects people with weaker immune systems thus meaning healthy individuals are relatively safe but it is highly important to take precautions against the spread of the virus.
More locally, the number on MondayMarch 9, 2020, the coronavirus amount was 40. In a one day difference, that number has doubled (in reported cases) and many more are being undetected. Schools like Harvard and MIT have taken such steps to suspend classes in person until the end of the semester to avoid the spread. Many schools are doing this but it seems that Northeastern is still allowing classes to continue without fully knowing whether anyone has coronavirus. There would be a huge impact for going online and may be costly, however, I am sure that many would agree that safety is way more important than a price tag.
Personally, I wouldn't mind going online for classes. Especially when hearing rumors go around the campus of individuals who visited a few of the locations that were highly flagged by the government not self-quarantine and are freely roaming the campus. Also, the rules of sitting every other seat in large lecture halls also are scary because it is an admittance of a problem but the virus is a respiratory virus so if it spreads it spreads. So I guess may the odds be in everyone's favor.

  2. I really like this post Julia! Also, I definitely agree that safety is more important. I have been thinking about this like all day and while there are many questions and concerns if we do end up going online, I think overall it would be in the interest of not only us students but the faculty and staff here.

  3. I think online classes are a good idea especially for large lectures. The main concern is that most international students are on a F1 visa which requires them to have a full course of study and this does not include online classes. This would force them to have to go back to their homes, which might be too expensive or too dangerous. This also applies to people who live far from boston in the US aswell. If we are forced to pack up and leave many people might not want to pay to travel across the country when they don't know how soon they will need to be back.
