Review Ideas - Chris Brooks

1) Late Registration by Kanye West

One of my favorite albums ever by one of my favorite artists ever. This is the album most representative of the soul-sample using, pink polo wearing, George Bush muckraking Kanye West we all initially fell in love with.
The two things that made Kanye such an endearing figure was that he wasn't afraid to be vulnerable in his music, and his willingness to speak up on things he believed in, which made him feel more relatable than your typical mainstream rapper at the time.
By drawing comparisons between America's crack cocaine epidemic and its gross fascination with black culture, describing his family's anxiety as his grandmother battles illness, and singing about how much he loves his mother Kanye best epitomized these admirable traits on his magnum opus, Late Registration.

2) Bojack Horseman

The object of my most recent Netflix binge, Bojack Horseman is one of the most intelligent shows I've watched in a while. Centered around a fictional actor who was the star of a successful sitcom back in the '90s and still hasn't quite gotten over it, it's an adult cartoon that's technically classified as a comedy but deals with topics like substance abuse, the pitfalls of fame, transgenerational trauma, and mental health. An absolutely amazing show with great characters and many memorable moments.

3) Space Jam

Critics, eat shit.
I don't care what the informed movie-watcher thinks of this film, it will forever be an absolute masterpiece to me. Sure, when I rewatch Space Jam I see plotholes, dated special effects, corny jokes, and crappy acting, but do I care? No. When "I Believe I Can Fly" starts playing and the camera pans to a young Michael Jordan shooting hoops on the chain net in his backyard, I'm reminded of warm fireplaces, footsie pajamas, and basketball games with my older brother on our toy hoop.
Space Jam will always have a special place in my heart, and no Rotten Tomatoes score will ever change that.

Comments

  1. Chris, I think all of these are good ideas. Even Space Jam! (My six-year-old found that the other day and loved it. I'd forgotten how the NBA season basically gets suspended because of the mysterious "illness" — relevant!).

In office hours the other day you were talking about BoJack Horseman, and I think you've already shown, in your brief remarks above, that you have interesting stuff to say about it.
