Blog #12-Samantha Rhynard

This post is a continuation of a story from last week's post, so it might be a little bit confusing if you don't read that one. But don't let me tell you what to do.
I should also give some context as to what the built-ins in my room look like. I've said they cover one wall, but they also stretch a little onto another. The bottom half is cabinet-style cupboards and drawers, with a surface on top, much like what happens in kitchens—this is probably a bit lower than your average kitchen, but that's not important. Above these cupboards are shelves, which are wonderful for holding bins to put things in, specifically those foldable bins from Target that have the handle on the front and a flat piece that reinforces the bottom. Anyways, the cupboard surface extends across the whole wall, and where it wraps around to the other wall, there is a desk, and. there is a similar style of shelving on the other half of the wall(Yes, finally! We have gotten back to the desk). This setup has worked well for me for about 4 years—the built-ins provide a wonderful amount of storage, and the desk is lovely and large, because it is in the corner. Alas, to excavate—or more accurately, burry deeper—the mouse that died in my room, my parents took out many of the cabinets on the wall, leaving all the shelves, only a few cupboards, and the desk area. I have adapted, and the room is still fine, with plenty of storage in the rest of the built-ins.
The problem arises with my father—him being a problem in it of himself—wanting to fix the fact that...well I'm not actually sure what his initial complaint was. But since deciding that he wants to do something about the desk, he has come up with many grievances. The desk is too high; the desk is too deep; the edge is unfinished, and therefore dangerous; and God forbid, I'm ruining the aesthetic of the house! So anyways, its been decided that something needs to be done. When I finally agreed that we could do something about the desk—my previous stance had been that it has worked for this long, why do we need to change anything now, but the man cannot be stopped sometimes—my dad was ready. He laid before me and my mom an elaborate, $10,000 plan to build a custom desk and cabinets to match and integrate into the preexisting built-ins. Besides the fact that I was not too excited about any of it, the expression on my mom's face that said, hey, you're paying for that from my bonus said to me that none of this was going to happen. Together, my mom and I came to the much more reasonable conclusion that we could get removable pieces of furniture that fit my needs, but can be removed when I have permanently moved out in the future to give my father free reign over what he wants to do.
So long story short, I am getting a new desk. And a nightstand. Which will hopefully be good, or at least reasonable enough that I can show my dad the "improvement" it has made, to work towards satiating his desire to completely redo our entire house.
but I fear my mother and I may never win. Just last week, he told me he wanted to gut the kitchen.
