Final Reflection- Blog post #13- Abby Jiminian

My first year of college was nothing ordinary. To start I spent the first three months of my first year in Greece. Not a lot of people can say that (almost everyone in this class can but that is besides the point). I had a very unique experience being able to immerse myself in a different community and understand different cultural values. Greece was definitely an eye opening experience with lots of turning points and lessons in my life that I will carry throughout my entire life. While there were times I was homesick or annoyed with being so far away I wouldn't have changed that experience for anything because I grew up a lot. I had to learn how to live alone in a whole other country. While in Europe I took so many wonderful trips to different parts of Europe and saw so much beauty. Mykonos, Athens, London, Milan, Hungary and more. I was able to go to some really cool places at 18 years young with some pretty amazing people. Being in Greece definitely taught me to just live life and seize every moment you have. I mean life literally flies by you and if you think about the logistics of things too much you aren't going to enjoy life.

Once I left Greece and came back home everyone asked me if I took a gap year or if I even went to college which was a funny experience to tell them about. I mean I was literally "the person that went to Europe for three months "to everyone in my town. I had to explain to everyone that I actually went to school I just took advantage of being in Europe and went on weekend trips when I could. No one believed me when I said that I went to school from 11-6pm everyday but it's true just ask the other NUin Greece kids.

January rolled around and that meant my second semester was starting in Boston this time. I had to do another orientation which was a waste of my time and then started classes pretty early on. I started classes way before all my friends did so I didn't get to see them that much during winter break. Being in Boston was interesting. The first few weeks I couldn't escape the Nu Idiot comments. However,  I was still able to meet some really cool people on campus. Shortly after they dignified me with the title of " the girl that did Nuin but isn't like the rest of them". I guess I took that like a compliment because of all the backlash Nuin students get when they come to Boston for spring semester. Boston was a different experience than Greece but not in a bad way. I enjoyed my time in Boston and befriended some amazing people but it was cut short and there was still a lot I didn't get to experience which bummed me out.

I won't complain too much because I saw Northeastern beat BU in Beanpot and win for the third time in a row, but I still missed out on a lot because of Corona. Don't get me wrong I get that we are in a pandemic but I definitely miss the on campus life. Like I never went to a Northeastern Spring fest because it didn't happen and that sucks but I can't change the reality of the situation. I also am not a huge fan of online classes and I just miss my friends. I miss hanging out with people and making dumb decisions just because I could. Being locked in my house is hard. Like I just left for college I had all the freedom in the world and that was cut short. I just want to go back to the times where I could text someone to come over or to meet up with me and we would just explore and have fun.

The best way to describe my freshman year is a movie trailer. So many wild things happened in my first year that it honestly sounds like it would make a good movie. All the ups and downs, the highs and lows all made this year one to remember. While the end of it wasn't like anyone would have anticipated I'm still glad I got to have this experience. I think I learned a lot in this one year and grew up significantly. Even though I do wish I was still in my West Village apartment I can at least talk about how unconventional my first year of college was. Only a small handful of people had such a wild roller coaster for their first year and in the future I know it will be quite the conversation starter.

Bye everyone I hope you all have an amazing summer once this pandemic calms down and we are finally able to go about our normal lives. If anyone needs to talk or needs tv recommendations I am your girl. Good luck with your finals and I hope to see you all in the fall.
