Sabrina Shao's 12th Blog Post
My high school was a mix between a boarding school and a regular school. We had students from all around the world living on campus and students who lived a short 15 minute drive away. Last year, after my mom moved out of the US, I began boarding on campus. It was during this year of living on campus that my feelings towards walking changed.
I used to hate walking. I always thought it was too slow. I also hated running because I thought it was too tiring. This resulted in me preferring not to move when I didn't have to. Last year when I lived on campus, between the hours of after sports and before study hall, my friends and I did not know what to do with ourselves. We didn't want to spend these 2 hours of freedom in a building watching TV because we knew that once it got cold out, that is what we will be using the 2 hours for. Instead, we usually spent the 2 hours going on walks. On many occasions, these walks didn't really have a destination. We would either wander around the small town around our school or say that we're going to go to the Dunkin' nearby, get there and realize that none of us really want anything before just walking to literally anywhere else. It was during this time that I cultivated an appreciation for walking. I started to enjoy the slow pace and the lack of purpose. I found that walking around with someone was a nice way of getting to know them.
I am extremely thankful that this appreciation for walking was cultivated then because in a time like this, the only thing I can do when I am bored and ready to get out of the house, is go on a walk (or a run but I really got to be in the mood for a run to get a good workout so). Over the past month, I have been somewhat motivated and I have been going on runs; however, the ever so unmotivated side of me would creep up every now and then and instead of running, I would just go on a walk. This past Saturday, my sister and I went on a 2 hour walk around Boston. We had no destination in mind. We just walked and walked until we were ready to go home before finally using google maps to find our way back home. I had a very nice time on this walk, bonding with my sister and enjoying the fresh air. We were also very pleased to find out that during our walk, we had lost about 350 calories so I counted that as my workout for the day.
The day after that, we drove out of Boston to Milton, MA and walked on some walking trails. I enjoyed the change in scenery with all the trees around. It reminded me of my hometown in western mass where I lived before my mother moved to another country. Even though I really do like Boston, I do miss the suburbs vibes like having walking trails and backroads so going to a place like that was something I didn't realize I needed. Even though this quarantine can really make me feel a little stir-crazy sometimes, I am glad that I have found a good escape through walking, something that I never thought I would ever enjoy.

I used to really not like walking either. Before I got my license I had to walk to and from school every day and I hated it. When I was walking to school I was always running late and it would be a half run/walk and when I was walking home I would always be exhausted from the school day and would just want to be home. I had a friend of mine who was my neighbor who loved to walk and I used to never understand why. Once I got my license she would always decline when I offered to drive her, even when it was raining, because she like walking so much. It wasn't really until Greece and being on campus that I realized how enjoyable walking can be. I would even find myself taking the long walk back to my dorm from class especially when the weather was nice.
